Dr Bike is nothing new for it has been around in various different guises in other locations for years. At one time there was a free cycle repair service which operated on a regular basis from St Mary's Social Centre. From what I recall, it eventually folded through want of a venue, leaving a void for a number of years.

It was in 1991 that LEAP (Lewes Environmental Action Programme) organized the first Green Wheels Day to encourage the use of sustainable transport in Lewes and District. The event was masterminded by a team of volunteers lead by, amongst others, Tina Deubert and Alan Chapman. The event consisted of a number of eco activities in strategic locations throughout the town with a grand procession comprising a series of environmental vehicles, a band, together with marchers toting placards promoting Eco slogans. Since cycling represents a fairly prominent form of sustainable transport, it was considered important to promote safety for both machine and rider. A small group of volunteer mechanics carried out minor repairs, mainly to children's bikes, in the car park adjacent to the magistrates court whilst the local police provided a post code marking service nearby. Such was the demand for the Dr Bike service that it was barely possible to accommodate everyone who came along that day, whilst others needed to return for further 'treatment'.

Dr Bike came into being shortly after, although the location was changed to its present spot, outside of Fitzroy House - opposite Boots, in the pedestrian precinct. At one time there was a regular group of young mechanics who dutifully came each week, alas these have now moved away or are busy raising future generations of cyclists. Over the years there have been a number of other volunteer mechanics who have assisted in the cause of cycling but these, for one reason or other, are unable to continue. The LCA crew now consists of Pete Barnes and Chris Franks, the original Dr Bikes, who do their best to ensure the continuation of the service.

Dr Bike has also opened up shop in other locations by special request. Pete has undertaken workshops at the schools where he works, getting the children to bring in their bikes for a look-over and to teach basic cycle skills. Dr Bike has participated at Sussex University during their 'Bike to Work Days' as well as one-off events organized by the local authority.

Perhaps you see yourself as a volunteer mechanic? If you do, then why not come along to see us in action and maybe lend a hand? Of course, if you're thinking of setting up a similar facility in your own town, we'd be only too happy to have a chat and give you some pointers.
